Replacing a Toshiba Satellite M40, M45, and M50 Laptop Battery

This blog is a quest post by Jack Edmund. He is a blogger for the laptop battery and accessories retailer PriorityElectronics.com. His interests include kayaking, bird watching, and technology.

If you’re not planning to use your Toshiba Satellite M40, M45, or M50 laptop for a month or more, it may be a good idea to remove the battery (part numberPA3399U-1BRS) to help extend its life. Also, if the battery is spent or broken, it’s simple to replace the dysfunctional battery with a new one.

In order to remove the battery, save anything you’re working on and turn the laptop off. Make sure the Power indicator is off before proceeding. Remove any and all cables attached to the laptop and turn it over so that the back of the computer faces you. Slide the battery’s locking latch to the ‘unlocked’ position, and slide the release latch to free the battery. Carefully pull the entire battery pack forward to remove it, and set it aside. Do not dispose of a spent or broken battery pack, but instead return it to the nearest Toshiba dealer. Additionally, do not store the battery in direct sunlight, heat, or near metallic objects. Instead, keep it in a cool, dry place where it is not likely to be punctured or crushed in any way.

It is important to handle the battery pack carefully, to not drop or hit it, and to take care not to short-circuit the terminals; Touching metallic objects to the battery’s terminals can cause excessive current flow that will heat up the battery to physically dangerous temperatures. If this occurs, remove the metallic object and allow the battery to sit in a cool, dry place until it has cooled before attempting to handle it. Do not scratch or break the battery’s casing, and do not bend or twist the battery pack. Any physical damage to the battery may cause it to cease functioning and/or explode.

If replacing the battery, make sure that the new one is Toshiba-approved in order to avoid overheating or short circuiting. To install a new battery or reinstall your existing one, double-check that the power to the laptop is off and all cables are disconnected. Insert the battery pack and push down until it is firmly in place with an audible click. Then re-connect any cables and start the laptop as usual.

Finally, do not remove the battery pack while the computer is in Standby mode. This will result in data loss. It is possible to remove the battery while the laptop is in Hibernate mode without loss of data, though you must first check that the Toshiba Satellite’s Fixed HDD/ODD indicator light is not illuminated to ensure that data is no longer being transferred.
